Basic Photography Collection (Photo A1)

Project Introduction

For this project, you will take several photos that showcase your mastery of The Exposure Triangle of digital photography.

You will take and publish a Portfolio with various ISO settings (from low to high) to demonstrate your ability to manually control the ISO of a photo. You will also turn in at least 4 photos showcasing your mastery of f/stops (aperture) to demonstrate control of depth of field. Additionally, you will turn in 4 photos and different Shutter Speeds to show your understanding of showing motion in digital photography. All of your photos need to have the same exposures (no over or underexposed images) and be as interesting as possible.  Finally, all 12 photos will be uploaded to your Online Portfolio complete with the settings used to take the photos.  The style and layout of your gallery is up to you, but this is a great chance to try different things to see what you like best. 


Example Aperture Shots

In the example below, I have added a Slideshow of four Aperture settings featuring Dusty, the classroom bear.  The f/stop can be seen in the image both via the text, and the effect it has on the photo. You are not REQUIRED to use a Slideshow, I simply chose to do it as an example.

Example ISO Shots

Here is Dusty again, handsome as ever. This time, I changed the ISO values to try to capture the difference in film grain (difficult to see, but it is there for the trained eye!) I again thought a Slideshow would be best for this, thankfully WordPress makes that easy.

Example Shutter Speed Shots

One more time, Dusty into the fray. This time, I used a bamboo plant between the lens and the subject, applied constant wind and shot at four shutter speeds. This slideshow shows how at 1/250s the frame is essentially frozen (no motion) compared to a full 1s shutter, which shows the motion of the leaves in the wind.

Additionally, this third slideshow is a showcase of a bad application of The Rule of Thirds. Keep that in mind every time you shoot!

Project Requirements & Helpful Links

  • Minimum of 4 photos that showcase various Aperture values, from low to high.
    • These photos should prove your understanding and mastery of Depth of Field in Digital Photography.
    • You can shoot the same subject multiple times using different f/stops in order to really see the difference between photos.
  • Minimum of 4 photos that showcase various ISO values, from low to high.
    • These photos should prove your understanding and mastery of Using ISO to effect your photography.
    • ISO can be hard to see, unless you know what you are looking for. Be sure to shoot images that really showcase the differences.
  • Minimum of 4 photos that showcase various Shutter Speed values, from slow to fast.
    • These photos should prove your understanding and mastery of Creative Use of Shutter Speeds in Photography.
    • Shutter Speeds are an amazing way to change the feeling of a photo. Shoot interesting subjects actually DOING things.

Project Grading Rubric

The purpose of this assignment is for each student to be able to demonstrate mastery of the Exposure Triangle of photography, both technically and creatively. The photos should not only showcase the use of various Apertures, Shutter Speeds and ISOs, but should also be creative and interesting to look at. Students should be sure that the subject matter of the photo is interesting, as well as showcase creative use of various camera settings. All photos should be presented to a professional standard, and be ready for web viewing.

Student showcased absolute mastery over the project, and excelled both technically and creatively. Student provided above average photos showcasing ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speeds in a creative and technically correct way. Student demonstrated an acceptable amount of skill using the Exposure Triangle, but could have done better either technically or creatively. Student followed directions, but provided poor examples of the Exposure Triangle, creatively or technically.

Student did not follow directions, did not demonstrate proper use of the Exposure Triangle, or did not complete assignment.
