Folio A1: WordPress Portfolio Setup • Category: Portfolio
Project Introduction
In order to officially complete and turn in this assignment, you’ll need to show your Instructor that all required accounts are fully set up, accessible, and working properly. This verification must be done in person, with each account pulled up and logged in. Just saying, “Yeah, I did it,” without showing proof won’t count — nice try, but no shortcuts here.
These accounts are essential to everything we do in this class — from accessing software and watching tutorials to taking certification tests and turning in your work. Without them, you simply can’t move forward.
There’s one more requirement: You must also have your login information saved somewhere safe and accessible. This means all usernames and passwords should be written down, stored in a secure app, or emailed to yourself.
❗ Remember! If you lose your login credentials later, the Instructor won’t be able to help you recover them, and that could cause serious delays in your work.
Once your accounts are all set up and your login info is safely stored, have the Instructor to complete this check. This is one of the easiest full-credit grades you’ll earn — just take it seriously and get it done right.
Remember: if you’re stuck on any step, don’t sit there getting frustrated — reach out and I’ll walk you through it.
💬 Please be sure that you keep your login information for each of these accounts secure and accessible and somewhere that you can find it quickly. The Instructor can not help you access your account if you forget your username or password. I suggest you email yourself a list of usernames and passwords, or store the information on a note in your phone.
Project Requirements
- Professional Portfolio Name: I strongly suggest you use your First and Last Name when choosing your sub-domain. This is best for Search Engine Optimization for upcoming artists who want to get their design work out there in a searchable way.
- Use the Illustratr Theme: Be sure that your Theme is set to Illustratr (yes, spelled that way). For now, it’s the best starting place, and also has the basic requirements we need. You can feel free to change your theme much later in the class, and pick one that fits you best. For now, use Illustratr. Be sure to update the name of the website (to your name, or Your Name’s Portfolio) to under Appearance > Customize.
- Set up an About Me Page: This page needs to be set up properly, and filled out with information about you, the designer and owner of the portfolio. Not sure where to start? Read this article to get a sense of where to begin. This will be a good place to update with Adobe Badges earned as you get your certificates.
- Set up your Portfolio Page: This step is the most important, and fully changes how our website will work. The page needs to be set up using the Portfolio Page Template, and be set to your Homepage as well so visitors see your work first and foremost, which can be set up under Appearance > Homepage Settings.
- Set up your Posts Page: This is where your Posts and Tutorials will be published as you write them throughout the coming months in class. This gives us the ability to have all of our Posts show up properly each time we publish them. Be sure that your Homepage Settings have the Posts Page set to this new page as well under Appearance > Homepage Settings.
- Set up your Main Menu: For now, all you will need are three links on your Main Menu… Portfolio (that is just a link to your homepage), About Me, and Posts. Setting up your main menu can be done under Appearance > Customize > Menus.
Finalize & Publish your Portfolio: Once you have everything set up, check your Dashboard to see if there are any other steps you haven’t completed to launch the site live. Usually you will need to do things like confirm your email, etc. Your site isn’t ready until it is Launched.
Project Grading Rubric
This project is a simple Pass/Fail assignment. Either you got your accounts set up by the due date, or you didn’t. Don’t stress it if your accounts are being held up for reasons outside your control.
I may seem imposing, but I am not a MONSTER! If you are having trouble getting through the account setup process for one reason or another, just be sure that the Instructor is in the loop. For example, if your eCard is being delayed by something outside of your control, you won’t lose points for that.
| PASS (100%) | FAIL (0%) |
| The student completed setting up all of the required accounts on or before the due date,. What a TRUE CHAMPION. | The student did not complete all of the requirements of the assignment. One or more accounts were not set up properly. |
